RoC® launch new 'magic bullet' to combat sagging

As we age, we all know our skin can lose its suppleness and sometimes start to sag. To help combat this, RoC® has spent five years developing a 'magic bullet' called THPE, which aims to tighten the surface and noticeably lift the skin.

The science bit: "THPE works by triggering the micro-contractions of keratinocytes in order to tighten the surface and noticeably lift the skin", say RoC®. And it can be found in their new Complete Lift range, which features a daily moisturiser, flash serum, eye cream and overnight cream.

RoC®'s Complete Lift Lifting Daily Moisturiser (£29.35) is clinically proven to provide, on average, a 2mm lift that lasts all day for a visibly younger looking you.

For parties and special occasions where you need an extra lift quick,  RoC®'s new Complete Lift Lifting Flash Serum (£29.35) is a highly concentrated, rapidly absorbed daily serum that combines THPE and Bugrane technology with a powerful wheat polymer to give skin an immediate lift.

For a measurable lift and visible reduction in dark circles for a sparkling first impression, Anti-Dark Circle Lifting Eye Cream (£21.50) is a velvety eye cream designed to lift the eyelids. It has a radiance enhancing pigment to reduce the appearance of dark circles and give your eye contours a luminous glow. Perfect for hiding tired eyes.

And for an overnight boost, RoC®'s Complete Lift Overnight Regenerating Lifting Cream (£29.35) is specially formulated for the night, when the skin is at its most receptive.

Friends of the bees!

Ok, so this has not an awful lot to do with fashion or beauty, but it's about bees. And saving the bees. The bees are in trouble and we love them. So here goes:

Friends of the Bees is a new, UK-based charity founded to conserve and protect bees, to educate people about bees and to research and promote more natural beekeeping methods.

Friends of the Bees is a way that everyone can become involved with bees – and not just honeybees, but also the other native species, including bumblebees and mason bees, which are also very important pollinators.

Friends of the Bees was inspired by the Natural Beekeeping Network – a growing, worldwide movement of over 1500 beekeepers in 160 countries who are developing more natural ways to look after their bees. Nearly half the membership is in the UK.

Many of these beekeepers started down the path of 'natural beekeeping' after reading The Barefoot Beekeeper, a book written by Friends of the Bees director Phil Chandler.

He says, "The recent stories of honeybees being in decline have made many beekeepers look more critically at the way they treat their bees. We don't want to have to medicate them or put synthetic chemicals into our hives – it goes against all our instincts and detracts from the public's perception of honey as a natural, unadulterated product."

"We are working with the Soil Association to match organic farmers with local, natural beekeepers, so farmers will have the benefit of bees on their land, and the  bees will have the benefit of the greater biodiversity found on organic farms."

"Where we differ from traditional beekeepers is that we are less concerned with honey yields and more with the wider implications of helping to maintain a valuable species in the best possible health. You cannot do that by making them dependent on drugs."

Natural beekeeping events and courses will be available from spring 2010 in a number of locations, starting with Embercombe in Devon.

A botox alternative in a jar?

Normally, Botox injections are the beauty industry’s only answer to a wrinkle free, plumped up complexion. Until now! By using a revolutionary new ingredient called Syn-ake®, Planet Skincare has produced a 'miracle cream'.

Syn-ake is (believe it or not) synthetic snake venom engineered to mimic the real thing. The venom in the Temple Viper has paralytic properties, owing to a combination of three amino acids which together inhibit the signals sent to a muscle telling it to contract.

"When used in skincare, Syn-ake® has the ability to reduce muscle cell contractions that cause wrinkles, and in doing so, provides Botox-like results," said a spokesman.

Clinical tests have shown that 80% of the volunteers tested showed a remarkable smoothing effect and an anti-wrinkle effect was demonstrated in 73 per cent of the volunteers over a 28-day period.

Syn-ake also won the 2006 Swiss Technology Awards for its innovation and technical capabilities.

Planet Skincare's products are paraben free and are not tested on animals. The range is available from Selfridges and www.planetskincare.co.uk.

Check out my biceps - oh yes

Recently, I’ve found myself showing off my arm muscles to anyone who’ll pay attention, demanding glances of admiration.

Granted, this is slightly abnormal – and not entirely feminine - behaviour, but I can actually feel them getting bigger. And with all the pain that has come with said gain (we’re talking shaky arms lifting weights for many reps, press-ups, pull-ups, bench-presses – I could go on...) I want some praise.

I’ve been training with Karen from Matt Roberts for two months now and it really all starts coming together when you can see – and feel - the results.

We’re not talking Incredible Hulk-style muscles here – or even that Sarah Connor out of Terminator. But if you need a heavy suitcase lifting – or a big load of shopping carrying home – suddenly, I’m your (wo)man.

I’m training for the Royal Parks Half Marathon which is set to take place this October and am trying to see if I can do it in under two hours. So far I’ve been doing one gym session and one running session with Karen every week (if anyone has ever tried what are known as ‘intervals’ – that’s repeated short sprints, sometimes up hills – midway through a 10K run – you’ll understand my pain). Plus I’ve gone for a third run on my own most weeks for extra brownie points.

At first my appetite shot up and I was worried about whether I’d actually tone up given the amount of food I was putting away – but your metabolism soon speeds up and being able to eat cake when you want without a second thought for your hips is a most enjoyable bonus.

If you want to find out more about personal training, visit Matt Roberts.

Rebalance, hydrate and repair

Need a nourishing treatment for dry, tired or combination skin? Molton Brown have just launched a set of three facial oils to soothe your summer-dry complexion.

Containing active ingredients from Tunisia, Somalia and Hungary – each promises a unique sensory experience:

The Tunisian Neroli Balancing Facial Oil is designed to rebalance and hydrate combination skin, the Somalian Myrrh Hydrating Facial Oil is a deeply hydrating oil designed for very dry skin - and for tired or stressed-looking skin, the Hungarian Wild Carrot Repairing Facial Oil will help to repair and revitalise.

This last little beauty also helps to combat visible signs of ageing by leaving skin feeling firmer, and more energised.

For best results, use the facial oils at night after cleansing. Warm a few drops between palms, inhale the aroma and gently sweep across the face, neck and décolletage in an upward motion, avoiding the eye area.

Molton Brown facial oils are £39 and available from moltonbrown.co.uk.

Gwyneth Paltrow launches fashion line!

You heard it here first. Gwyneth Paltrow has hooked up with French jersey brand ZOEtee’s to create a seven silhouette collection of easy dressing, ranging from basics to draped evening styles.

Launching for Autumn/Winter 2009, Paltrow has played an integral part in the collection, from choosing the fabrics, fitting and detailing - and even the packaging.

The range captures Paltrow’s laid back daytime style and her elegant evening look with a synthesis of masculine casual suiting, 70’s style glam and rock inspiration.

All proceeds from sales will go to the Kids Company, a charity of Gwynnie’s choice.

'ZOEtee’s LOVES Gwyneth Paltrow' also includes pieces which are comfortable enough for a busy morning and yet elegant for an evening out.

Mesh detailed tops, draped evening dresses, vintage style sweatshirts, jumpsuits and recycled cotton legging basics have all been specially selected by Paltrow to complement her style.

The fabrics used include recycled cotton and cashmere blends as well as wool mesh and stud details – and each piece is made from high quality Japanese knit to ensure exceptional quality.

ZOEtee’s LOVES Gwyneth Paltrow will be available from Matches and online at www.matchesfashion.com, from the end of August and beginning of September.

Prices ranging from £100 to £595.

Soothe tired eyes

The delicate skin around the eye area is very thin and prone to puffiness and sagging so needs special care. Thankfully, there are ways to refresh work-weary computer eyes and revitalise partied-out peepers, the latest of which is LAVERÉ (pronounced la-ver-ray) Hydro Energy Cool Eye (£27.50).

This nifty and portable eye gel comes in a handy roll-on format and is bursting with 16 genuinely natural and organic BDIH-certified anti-ageing ingredients to help brighten tired and puffy eyes. Applying the roll-on in circular motions around the eyes dispenses the eye gel while the small nickel-free metal ball provides additional cooling relief.

High-tech active ingredients include beauty miracle worker hyaluronic acid, plus pentavitin, wickenol, water lily extract, and a fruit acid complex made with certified organic extracts of Apricot, Pomegranate and Mango to provide 24-hour moisturising care.

Cova B trox and rooibos extracts help improve the fine lines around the eyes and promote cell protection, while rovisome F.C.E stimulates the eye area and helps reduce puffiness. In user trials, 85% of women said their skin felt firmer and more refreshed after three weeks.

LAVERÉ is available from department stores, quality health food stores and organic apothecaries. For mail order, call 01557 870568 or visit www.lavere.co.uk.

Join the Royal Parks Half Marathon

I've been sweating it out in the gym for five weeks now at Matt Roberts, in a bid to run this year's Royal Parks Half Marathon in under two hours.

I'm definitely feeling stronger and fitter for it (I'm up to EIGHT full press-ups now, having been unable to do a single one when I started) though I can't help grimacing with a touch of resentment when my long-legged, 6ft 2in husband laps me on a training session in Hyde Park on a Sunday morning.

The Royal Parks Half Marathon is taking place this October 11th and teams of six or more can still enter for the Corporate Challenge, so why not persuade your company to get fit and enter?

Training together is a great way to be healthy, meet people from different departments and foster team spirit.

And those who don't fancy running can get involved with supporting their colleagues, helping them fundraise and coming along to cheer them on during race day, while also enjoying the free Brakes Food & Fitness Festival.

Each runner will be supplied with an official number, bamboo race shirt and timing chip before the day – although Royal Parks love seeing teams in costume or company t-shirts too!

There will be a prize awarded to the fastest team, calculated on the average completion time of the runners. In addition, all corporate team runners will be eligible for the individual prizes on offer.

Details for how to apply can be found at www.royalparkshalf.com/corporate-challenge. Good luck!

Competitors must be 17 to apply.

Post retail sex: most of us are more turned on after shopping!

British women are more likely to be in a positive mood after shopping, with the majority agreeing they are more likely to have sex with their partner after a good spree!

The study of 2062 women, aged 18-35, found nearly half of British females feel more attractive after shopping for themselves and are subsequently more likely to want to have sex with their partner.

When asked “are you more likely to feel ‘in the mood’ for sex after shopping?” 38% of respondents said ‘yes’.

The research, commissioned by www.MyCelebrityFashion.co.uk, discovered that shopping acts as a way to improve the mood of 86% of the nation, with just 12% of participants stating that they shopped out of necessity rather than to add to their wardrobe or for enjoyment.

When asked the multi-answer question, “Are any of the following feelings applicable to you after shopping?” the top 5 answers were as follows:

Happier – 86%
More relaxed – 69%
Guilty – 61%
More attractive – 46%
Depressed– 14%

The study also found that nearly 90% of women aged 18-35 had shopped for clothes online, with two-fifths of females of this age group saying they preferred this method of shopping. .

Jilly Tovey, MyCelebrityFashion’s Head Stylist says: “We had heard from a number of users that they felt more “in the mood” after shopping, so decided to be blatant and ask our users outright! To find that over a third of women feel more sexual and nearly half feel more attractive after shopping are just two more reasons why shopping, even in the recession, is still big business.”

Do you feel more 'in the mood' after shopping? Talk about it here.

Detox your locks this summer

Harsh treatments, daily heat damage and pollution can weaken and dry the hair out, making it look dull and lifeless. Summer sun calls for clean, healthy locks that shine with radiance and vitality so take steps to bring your tresses back to life with a detoxing hair regime from Umberto Giannini, which will banish build-up, boost moisture levels and restore health and shine.

The Umberto Giannini Spa Rituals Detoxifying Shampoo (£4.99) is a daily cleanser, which contains purifying extracts of rosemary and thyme and is specially formulated to deep cleanse the hair and rid it of product build-up.

Product director Ben Randle advises careful handling of the hair when cleaning:'Most of us know that hair is at its most fragile when wet, so take care not to over tangle and rough up the hair cuticles by shampooing too vigorously. Instead, gently drench the hair with water, apply shampoo in the direction of the hair length and massage into the scalp as you go.

Next, use a good conditioner to seal the hair cuticles and lock in moisture. The Spa Rituals Rebalancing Conditioner (£4.99) invigorates and revitalises dull hair leaving it soft, shiny and deeply nourished thanks to the softening properties of fig and olive.

For a weekly hair treat, hair masks and elixirs are a must, especially for coloured or  treated hair. Try the Spa Rituals Moisture Replenishing Hair Mask (£4.99), which has a sublime fragrance and luscious texture, and is the best-selling product in the Spa Rituals range.

And for a deep nourishing hair treat, the Spa Rituals Brightening Plus Hair Elixir (£9.99) is a salon-style intensive repairing concentrate with the enriching properties of milk and vitamin B5 that penetrate the hair shaft.

Available at Boots Stores and Umberto Giannini Hair Salons nationwide.
